The Walking Dead season 9 premiere paid tribute to late Hershel actor Scott Wilson

The Walking Dead season 9 opener paid tribute to late actor Scott Wilson last night (October 7), who recently passed away after a battle with leukaemia.

Wilson portrayed Hershel Greene on the show between 2011 and 2014, before his character met a grisly end at the hands of David Morrissey’s Governor in one of the show’s best ever episodes.

Titled ‘A New Beginning’, the first episode of season 9 closed with the image, which read: “In Memory of Scott Wilson,” accompanied by a portrait of his beloved bearded character.

Meanwhile, with Talking Dead following the season premiere straight after broadcast on AMC, the lack of discussion surrounding Wilson’s sad passing was noticeable.

However, there was a fair reason for this, as the after-show was in fact recorded several days before the news of the actor’s death.

Talking Dead‘s official Twitter page acknowledged the situation with the below post.

It’s recently been confirmed that Wilson shot scenes for season 9, with Hershel possibly set to appear in flashback scenes connected to Rick Grimes’ eventual exit. This is alongside Sonequa Martin-Green’s Sasha Williams and Jon Bernthal’s Shane Walsh.

The Walking Dead season 9 premiered on AMC in the US last night (October 7) and airs on FOX at 9pm in the UK tonight, as well as on NOW TV.
