The Umbrella Academy soundtrack: List of songs from The Umbrella Academy

Quirky Netflix superhero show, The Umbrella Academy has gained a huge following since dropping on the streaming site last last month (February 15). The superhero series was created by musician Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance fame and artist Gabriel Bá and is based on their comic books of the same name. The Umbrella Academy has also been highly praised for its epic soundtrack.

Such is the popularity of The Umbrella Academy soundtrack, Netflix created an official playlist on Spotify where fans can listen to some of the best songs from the series in one place.

Way is well known for being the frontman of emo band My Chemical Romance, so a strong musical element to the show was crucial.

The song that has become synonymous with The Umbrella Academy and its iconic characters is a new tune by Way and MCR guitarist Ray Toro called Hazy Shade of Winter.

Leading the cast as one of the super siblings is Ellen Page, joined by Robert Sheehan, Tom Hopper, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Casteñeda and Aidan Gallagher.

Other stand out bops on the soundtrack include Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now, which the characters all dance to in the opening episode.

In an interview with TV Line, executive producer/showrunner Steve Blackman spoke about the show’s music choices.

“Music had to be its own character for the show, and I wanted to use it to sort of counterpoint things, like using ‘Istanbul’ in the pilot when little Five (played by Aidan Gallagher) is shooting all the people around him,” he explained.

“I thought it was important to find a way to counterpoint violence and to do music in a different way, to live within the scene, as something of a character in itself.”

HOW DID BEN DIE IN THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY?

Way told the publication that Blackman “has a very distinct idea of what he wants, which is why he puts them in the scripts and he encourages his writers to do the same thing”.

Blackman continued: “Music is important, and we wanted the show to really have not only its own soundtrack, but its own style, and part of that style was having great music with it.

“We had Gerard and we thought we got to do it all, you know? ‘Cause who better to do it with?”

Other notable artists featured on the soundtrack include Queen, Radiohead, Nina Simone, Bay City Rollers and The Doors.

Way added: “As a musician that often gets asked to put music in stuff, you really do wanna know how it’s being used.

“Sometimes they can’t be bothered to tell you, so you just end up saying no. But you really do wanna know that, and so I think that was a good approach.”
