The Trailer For 'American Horror Story: Apocalypse' Proves Season 8 Will Redeem The Series

Surprise! Fans probably thought they’d seen the last of their favorite American Horror Story characters, but they’re back. So many of them are back. The trailer for American Horror Story: Apocalypse is here, and so are all the best roles from Murder House (Season 1) and Coven (the series’s most delightful run thus far). While some fans feel the show has dropped in quality since then, Season 8 is here to change their minds.

If you’re thinking, “Hey, wait a second — aren’t there a lot of overlapping actors in those seasons?” you’re absolutely correct. Here’s how showrunner Ryan Murphy plans to handle it: multiple actors are pulling double, nay, triple duty. Add that to the mix of returning characters, sprinkle in guest appearances by old favorites, and BOOM: It’s an instant recipe for can’t-miss TV.

New York Magazine got a first look at the full-length trailer, and TBH, it’s more likely to pose questions than provide answers. Two of Sarah Paulson’s three characters appear and one of them is Venable, the apparent leader of a safety bunker called Outpost 3. That’s just the beginning, because have you seen the photos? This season is about to get crazy in the best possible way.

The proof is on the show’s official Twitter account:

One of the greatest “reveals” in Murder House was similar to that of The Sixth Sense: They were dead the whole time! Well, not all of them were dead the entire time, but once characters died, they were unable to leave the “Murder House.” How that detail will play out in this spooky, apocalyptic vision of the world remains unclear. For example, Violet’s parents (played by Murder House alums Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott) died in Season 1 and they are expected to show up at least once in Season 8, episode six. Also, Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates — who appeared in Coven, Freakshow, Hotel, and My Roanoke Nightmare — will take on a brand new character named Ms. Meade for Apocalypse.

As fans know, Apocalypse features the triumphant return of Evan Peters (an AHS Staple), a long awaited cameo by Jessica Lange (who left the show after Season 4), and fresh face Cody Fern as Michael, the antichrist Britton’s Vivien Harmon gave birth to toward the end of Murder House. That guy — blue-eyed, fair-haired, not of this world — is the reason everyone is in this mess in the first place. Like, legit. Michael is responsible for the apocalypse, we just aren’t sure how yet. Also, Dame Joan Collins is in Season 8! How? Why? As who? These are the real mysteries.

The American Horror Story: Apocalypse trailer also gifted us part two of that famous Emma Roberts meme. Surprise, indeed.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse premieres September 12th, so you have plenty of time to brush up on both seasons. Just make sure you remember to sleep with the light on! This trailer might be more mysterious than scary, but if seven previous seasons of American Horror Story have taught fans anything, it’s to expect things to turn real scary, real effing fast.
