The Simpsons Movie is finally getting a sequel

Simpsons fans, rejoice! After years of speculation, the long-awaited sequel to the Simpsons Movie is now on the cards.

In 2007, fans flocked to cinemas everywhere to see their favourite cartoon characters hit the big screen in The Simpsons Movie.

Now, a decade after the original, an article in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reveals that Fox officially has another Simpsons movie in the pipeline.

So what has Fox said, what will the sequel be about, and – most importantly – will it star Spider Pig?

For those of you who don’t recall, the first Simpsons Movie saw bumbling dad-of-three Homer pollute the town lake in Springfield – condemning residents to be trapped in a giant dome glass. Doh!

Homer has to use his hopeless charms to negotiate with the Environmental Protection Agency and American government to stop the town from being decimated.

The film was a smash hit – raking in over $500m at the box office (£390m).

Fox hasn’t revealed key details about the plot of the next film yet, besides confirming it is happening.

Fox boss Stacey Snider is continuing with film development plans – even though uncertainty looms as the company faces being bought by Disney.

“Ms. Snider has emphasized a revamp of Fox’s approach to animation, bringing in a new partner to replace an expired deal with DreamWorks Animation after it was acquired by Comcast Corp,” the WSJ report claims.

“The film studio is partnering with the Fox television studio on a big-screen adaptation of the animated series Bob’s Burgers, a second Simpsons movie in development and a Family Guy film that would mix animation with live action, said people with knowledge of the projects,” the report adds.

So stay tuned Simpsons fans, more Spider Pig may well await you…
