Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are dead set on raising Baby Sussex away from the limelight. So much so that they are in the process of renovating a 10-bedroom estate home on the grounds of Windsor Estate. And while it’s not uncommon for royals to keep their young children out of the spotlight (even Prince William and Kate Middleton do it), the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might break a major royal tradition following their firstborn’s spring arrival.
Meghan Markle’s birth plan
In the royal family, it’s not uncommon for women to give birth, then introduce their baby to the public hours after. It’s a ritual that Kate Middleton, Princess Diana, and even Princess Anne partook in following their children’s births. But, as with many things in her new royal life, Meghan Markle might stray from the path of tradition. The Duchess of Sussex might not even give birth at the same hospital as the royal women before her.

It’s no secret that Meghan Markle is carving out her own space in the royal family. And, while she has followed some royal protocol, the Duchess of Sussex continues to break from tradition and stuffy old rules. Case in point: She might not deliver her firstborn at the St. Mary’s Hospital Lindo Wing like so many royal women before her (including her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana).
Instead, some believe the newest royal could deliver her baby closer to the new Sussex family home, Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor. And, she might even welcome her baby in her home. Rumor has it, the Duchess of Sussex has considered a home birth.

Following the birth of royal babies, their mothers and fathers typically pose for a photocall on the steps of St. Mary’s Hospital Lindo Wing before heading home. However, if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle choose to give birth to their son or daughter in Windsor instead of London (especially if they choose a home birth over a hospital), we might not meet the baby prince or princess right away.
Upon the royal-to-be’s arrival, the public will be notified of a new prince or princess with an official posting outside of Buckingham Palace. Upon Prince Louis’s arrival, a framed notice was placed outside the palace and, about a week after, Kensington Palace broke the news of his official name via Twitter.
A more private life for Baby Sussex
Despite their role in the royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle hope their children will live somewhat normal lives. They plan to raise Baby Sussex in the countryside, where he or she will have plenty of space to run around, play, and grow, without the constant threat of paparazzi and media attention. In addition, they hope to encourage their son or daughter (and any other children they might have) away from royal duties — so much so that they are considering declining an official royal title for Baby Sussex.
