The Purge season two: release date, cast, trailer, episodes and everything you need to know

The first season of the television take on The Purge has come to an end in the States and just dropped on Amazon Prime in the UK – but a second is already on its way.

Famously, The Purge follows events in an alternate United States ruled by a totalitarian government where every year all crime – including vandalism, murder, arson and theft – is legal for a 12-hour period.

The Purge executive producer Jason Blum shared the big news: “[Series creator] James DeMonaco has done it again: the propulsive and compelling story he created for season one of The Purge truly resonated with audiences in a significant way.

We are thrilled to embark on season two and can’t wait to bring more of James’ vision to USA and fans of The Purge.”

So get ready for much more murder and mayhem, all in a completely legal way. Here’s everything we know so far about The Purge season two.

The Purge season two release date: When can I see it?

The recent first season finale aired on Nov 6 in in the US (which, coincidentally was the same night as the mid-term elections) and, in the UK, episodes were available the day after their Stateside broadcast.

If the second run follows the same pattern as the first, expect filming to begin in May, with episodes hitting screens from September 2019.

The Purge season two cast: Who’s in it?

It appears that in typical Purge fashion most of the characters will be getting the chop though franchise creator James DeMonaco has stated that “some people” will be back: “We love all the characters, but… you know, we’ll have a lot of new characters.”

DeMonaco continued, “I think the beauty of [it] is that with each new Purge, we could have new faces that emerge. So unlike a lot of shows, which have to have people coming back, we’re not bound to that. So yeah, there is talk about bringing, I’ll say some people, back.”

So who could be part of this “some”?

The flash-forward in the season one finale showed us that Miguel (played by Gabriel Chavarria), Jenna (Hannah Anderson) and Penelope (Jessica Garza) had all survived – so perhaps we’ll see them back.

It would also make sense to see Pete the Cop (Dominic Fumusa) and his bar return, as there’s much about his past audiences are yet to know.

As for Joe (Lee Tergesen), it’s tough to say. Is he really dead? Time will tell.

And these “new faces” mentioned by creator DeMonaco, could one of these be the oft-mentioned but never-seen Purge self-help guru Bobby Sheridan? It looks likely.

The Purge season two trailer: When can I watch it?

As filming probably won’t begin until May 2019, it’s unlikely we’ll see a trailer before then.

Expected your first glimpse of the new series in June or July 2019.

The Purge season two spoilers: What’s going to happen?

The epilogue in season one hints at possible storylines to explore in the follow-up.

Miguel and Penelope have hit the streets to protect the innocent whilst Pete the Cop continues to make his bar a safe space during the Purge. This could be one strand that’s examined (and also finding out just who survived the first season and who didn’t).

Interestingly, Jenna has left America to live in Paris with her newborn baby where news reports hint that the EU might be installing its very own Purge Night very soon (at least Brexit got us out of that one).

This could mean a brand new location, not to mention cast for season two.

But is a crossover with the movie franchise possible?

Executive Producer Jason Blum hinted that it was certainly possible that the two universes will eventually converge in later seasons: “We talked about whether we wanted to connect the TV series to the movie, or make it a new Purge world.”

Blum continued: “There are a few easter eggs in this series, but the series is all new characters and in another world where the Purge exists, separate from the movies. Eventually, maybe one day, we’ll connect them, but we really invested new characters for the television series.”

The Purge season one is available on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
