The OC actress Mischa Barton joins The Hills reboot alongside the original cast

The O.C actress is heading to The Hills as she for joins the reboot of the hit MTV reality series.

It was announced today that the former wild child, now 32, would be joining the likes of Audrina Partridge, Brody Jenner and Heide and Spencer Pratt.

It seems that the actress who rose to fame as troubled teen Marissa Cooper in hit noughties show The O.C is adding another string to her bow – reality TV.

And fans were thrilled by the news.

One wrote: "Mischa Barton joining the reboot of The Hills, I'm actually off. this day could not get better."

Another enthusiastically tweeted: "Literally gasped out loud reading about Mischa Barton joining The Hills. This is my O.C. dream."

While others noted the irony of the casting: "On The OC, Mischa Barton played Marissa Cooper, the character that inspired Kristin and LC, the stars of Laguna Beach and subsequently The Hills.

Somewhat ironically, The Hills was initially a spin-off of Laguna Beach which was centred around 'The Real Orange County' – as inspired by the Josh Schwartz series in which Mischa starred.

It was only confirmed just last month that The Hills was set to experience a comeback – eight years after the final episode.

A trailer for the new series played during the MTV VMAs after some of its original stars posed on the pink carpet of the star-studded bash.

The promo reveals aerial views of Los Angeles as an acoustic version of Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten plays over the top. Stephanie Pratt says: "It's like we're all growing up."

However, Lauren Conrad and Kristen Cavallari WON'T be taking part in the show, with a source telling People that Kristen has a rival reality show on E! and Lauren is "in a different place in her life, but she wants everyone to enjoy themselves. She wishes everyone the best.”

Stephanie Pratt, Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt confirmed their involvement as they attended the MTV VMAs in New York last night.

Frankie Delgado and Jason Wahler also joined them at the ceremony.

The Hills marked a new era of reality TV when it came on air in 2006 and broke fans hearts when it ended in 2010.
