Angelina Jolie is getting back in front of the camera in a big way. The multi-hyphenate has not starred in a live-action film since her own 2015 effort “By the Sea,” opting to spend much of 2016 and 2017 working on her directorial effort “First They Killed My Father,” but as she wraps up work on “Maleficent 2” and gets started in the David Oyelowo-starring “Come Away,” Jolie is already locking in another meaty starring role. Variety reports that the Oscar winner is set to star in a big screen adaptation of James Scott’s 2014 novel “The Kept.” Jolie is also on deck to produce the film.
Per Variety, “the story is set in the winter of 1897, and follows a trio of killers that descends upon an isolated farm in upstate New York. Midwife Elspeth Howell returns home to the carnage: her husband and four of her children, murdered. Before she can discover her remaining son Caleb, alive and hiding the kitchen pantry, another shot rings out over the snow-covered valley. Caleb, who is 12 years old, must tend to his mother until she recovers enough for them to take to the frozen wilderness in search of the men responsible.”
The book will be adapted by rising screenwriter Alice Birch, who turned heads with her feature-length debut “Lady Macbeth,” which earned her a BIFA for Best Screenplay and BAFTA nods for both Outstanding British Film of the Year and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. “The Kept” will be Birch’s first film since her “Lady Macbeth” breakout.
