The Haunting of Hill House creator responds to fan theories about season 1's ending

The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan has responded to fan theories about season one’s ending.

In response to fans who reckon that perhaps Steve, Shirley, Theo and Luke didn’t have such a happy(-ish) ending, Flanagan told TVLine: “I’ve said a lot about the ending, and I’m reluctant to say more.

“I like that people are able to put their own spin on things, so I’m not eager to take that away from them.

“In this case, though, the ending can be read at face value.”

He continued: “If they’re still in the Red Room, it robs Hugh’s sacrifice (and the show itself) of any meaning. For me, it ends exactly as it appears to.”

Earlier this week, Flanagan revealed that he considered ending The Haunting of Hill House on a cliffhanger – which, we can all agree, would have been infuriating.

He told TVLine: “It didn’t look like anything I’d want out there in the world, which is why we abandoned it quickly.

“It was part of the very, very early conversations we had about it, but it never really took a shape that I’d want to talk about.”
