The Handmaid’s Tale season 3: Aunt Lydia’s past finally revealed as star drops hint?

As a teacher of the Rachel and Leah Centre, Aunt Lydia (played by Ann Dowd) uses violence against the Handmaids in order to keep them subservient.

However, little is known about what she did before the Takeover.

Although the actress behind the role, Ann Dowd, has opened the lid on the character’s past.

One viewer on a fan forum has pointed to an interview with the star where she said she was told by The Handmaid’s Tale creator Bruce Miller about Aunt Lydia’s former occupation.

User idan234 shared on Reddit: “I saw a interview with Ann Dowd on Seth Meyers show from August 2018 and she said there that Bruce (show creator) told her Aunt Lydia used to be a teacher.

“Seems this is pretty much a confirmation, didn’t see anything about it so thought I will post it.”

It certainly makes sense considering the post she occupies in Gilead.

But will fans ever see the show delve more into her backstory?

Ann has received wide acclaim for her portrayal of Aunt Lydia.

In 2017, she received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

She was nominated in the same category in 2018, but didn’t take home the gong.

The latest episode of the series, Household, saw the main characters moved from their regular surroundings to Washington D.C.

The previous episode saw the Waterfords pleading with the Canadian government to return Nichole.

Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) went to Washington D.C. with the intent to bring Canada to the table.

Two brand new characters were introduced into the mix as the Waterford met with High Commander Winslow (Christopher Meloni) and his wife Mrs Winslow (Elisabeth Reaser).

Meanwhile, June (Elisabeth Moss) agreed to meet with Swiss representative who were acting as a natural party between the Gilead and Canada talks.

She later had a dramatic showdown with Aunt Lydia where June had a cover put over her mouth.

“Do you want us to all be silenced?” June yelled at her, which caused Aunt Lydia to cry.

It looks like there could be a slight change to Aunt Lydia’s character afoot.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 continues on Wednesdays on Hulu and continues Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.
