ABC’s hit medical drama The Good Doctor returned to screens with season six. Having secured his role as an attending physician, showrunner Liz Friedman teased at some friction between Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) and a new intern.

The Good Doctor’s return finally provided fans with some major insight after the emotional rollercoaster that was the season five finale.

While fans were thrilled to see Shaun and Lea Dilalllo (Paige Spara) finally tie the knot, they were left on the edge of their seats after two major characters were attacked at the hospital.

The horrifying incident took place after Nurse Villanueva’s (Elfina Luk) violent ex-boyfriend Owen (Terry Chen) snuck into St Bonaventure Hospital, disguised as a delivery person.

There he stabbed the nurse and left her for dead, but his plan was interrupted after Dr Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) discovered the injured nurse.

As she turned around, she was confronted by Owen who stabbed her twice in the stomach before fleeing.

Thankfully for viewers, season six picked up right where it left off with the wedding being interrupted, for the doctor to head to the hospital as a result of the attacks.

Monday’s episode returned with a time jump as Shaun and Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) clocked in for their first day as reporting attendees.

As they will no longer have to report to the senior Doctors, Alex and Shaun had the responsibility of watching over the new interns

They were introduced to Danny Perez (Brandon Larracuente) and Danica ‘Danni’ Powell (Savannah Welch).

As Danny had already caught the attention of the nurses, Alex insisted they should work together.

Shaun agreed to work with Danny and although things appeared to be going well, the showrunner hinted at a potential clash.

Speaking on the interns, Liz Friedman shared: “Perez is a soulful guy.

“He grew up on a farm, and he has a calm and holistic approach to medicine.”

She highlighted: “But he is more complicated than he initially appears, he’s got some secrets in his past.”

As for Danny, Liz revealed she “has a strong sense of convictions”.

“She is former military, and she’s seen combat, so things that happen in this hospital that would alarm, upset or scare other people [do not upset her],” she added.

Speaking to TV Line, the showrunner teased: “And she’s going to have some real, complex [issues] with Shaun.”

Adding to her character description, Deadline reported: “She is an Annapolis graduate, having completed medical school in the Navy.

“Danni is charismatic, ethical to a fault, and competitive both inside and outside the hospital.

“She’s mature beyond her years and surprisingly comfortable defying authority, which is certain to stir up some drama.”

The Good Doctor season six is available on ABC in the US. A UK release date has yet to be announced.
