The Flash star Jesse L Martin taking medical leave from the show

The Flash star Jesse L Martin, who plays Detective Joe West, has taken medical leave from the CW series.

The news was first reported by TV Line, who answered a viewer question about why the character hasn’t been seen very much in recent episodes.

The site reported that Jesse suffered a back injury over the series’ hiatus, with a rep from the show adding: “We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West.”

No timeline has been given for Jesse’s return, though his character’s absence will be addressed at some point.

But as we wish the star a speedy recovery, fans of The Flash are currently gearing up for the show’s milestone 100th episode, where they can expect to see some of Barry Allen’s biggest enemies return.

Speaking to fansite DC World at MCM Comic Con in London, voice actor Tony Todd revealed that not only has he returned to reprise the role of Zoom, but plenty of other evil speedsters are joining him.

Todd was quoted as saying that all of the returning baddies are “wanting a piece of Barry”, with the villain line-up expected to include Reverse Flash, Savitar and The Rival.

Of course there’s also the small matter of the massive crossover between The Flash and fellow Arrowverse shows Supergirl and Arrow, which begins on Sunday, December 9.

The crossover starts with The Flash on Sunday, December 9 at 8pm ET, followed by Arrow on Monday, December 10 at 8pm ET and Supergirl on Tuesday, December 11 at 8pm ET, all on The CW in the US.

The CW airs The Flash in the US every Tuesday at 8pm ET. Sky One and NOW TV air the show in the UK.
