The fate of new Star Wars trilogy from The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson is revealed

Star Wars: The Last Jedi definitely caused a great disturbance in the fandom (there is a crowd-funded attempt to remake it, after all), but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Lucasfilm has lost faith in its Jedi master.

Before the film was even released last Christmas, the studio made the huge announcement that it had signed up The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson to create a brand new trilogy of films set in “a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”.

Then came the film’s release, and all hell broke loose in the Star Wars community, with recriminations among fans, some constructive criticism from Mark Hamill, and Johnson passionately defending his work often on social media.

There hasn’t been much announced about his new Star Wars trilogy since. In fact, Lucasfilm recently signed up Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss to make their own instalments in the franchise.

But anyone worried that Rian Johnson’s work with the studio has quietly been dropped can chill, because he confirmed to a fan on Twitter this week that he’s still actively at work on his Star Wars movies at the moment.

That’s obviously a hugely positive sign for the many, many fans who enjoyed The Last Jedi. For those who didn’t, Johnson has made it clear that your negative feedback won’t have an impact on his new trilogy.

“I mean, I feel like every Star Wars thing that ever gets made has a big, loud response because Star Wars fans are passionate and that’s what makes them awesome,” Johnson recently argued.

“I don’t think it’s possible when, if you’re really telling a story you care about and having it come from your heart, it’s just not possible to be intellectually processing what everyone else wants and nor would it be a good thing, a healthy thing. I don’t think that’s a good way to tell a story.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download.
