The Affair's Ruth Wilson insists there's a much bigger story behind her exit from the show

Ruth Wilson has discussed her exit from The Affair, again suggesting that there is more to the story behind why she left.

The star’s character Alison died during the fourth season. While she previously confirmed that she asked to leave the Showtime series, she also said that she was “not allowed to talk about why”.

Wilson was asked about it by the New York Times, and although she remained tight-lipped, she commented that “there is a much bigger story”.

“It isn’t about pay parity, and it wasn’t about other jobs. But I’m not really allowed to talk about it.”

Showtime released a statement earlier this month, saying: “We can’t speak for Ruth, but heading into season four everyone agreed the character’s story had run its course. Ultimately, it felt like the most powerful creative decision would be to end Alison’s arc at the moment when she had finally achieved self-empowerment.”

Alison’s death first appears to be a suicide. It is later revealed that she was murdered by Ben (Ramon Rodriguez).

In season 4 episode 9, two different versions of events are shown. The first, via Alison’s wish fulfilment dream, sees Ben coming clean with her about his marriage and his traumatic past in Afghanistan, before saying he has left his wife and wants to be with her.

Then, in the second version, Ben lashes out at Alison when she confronts him over his marriage and kills her in a fit of rage, before dumping her body in the ocean.

Wilson has also thanked the fans for their support.

The Affair airs on Showtime in the US and on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
