The 7 biggest ways Captain Marvel's trailer links to the wider MCU and Marvel comics

We’ve finally had our first proper look at Brie Larson in action as Captain Marvel thanks to the first trailer for the upcoming solo movie.

While the trailer isn’t big on information outside of what we already knew about Captain Marvel, there are plenty of connections to the wider MCU and the character’s comics background to dig into.

So that’s just what we’ve done.

1. Infinity War pager

The Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene teased Captain Marvel as Nick Fury whipped out a pager that showed her symbol on its screen.

We appear to see the same pager again in the trailer as Nick Fury is heard saying, “We can’t do this alone,” while typing “with target”. Between Captain Marvel and Infinity War though, it’s been pimped out, likely for space communication.

2. Classic costume

When the first pictures of Larson on set were released, fans were concerned that she was wearing a dull green costume rather than Captain Marvel’s standard red, blue and gold.

Well, the green costume is in the movie (and has been used in the comics before), apparently as the uniform of the alien Kree Empire’s Starforce team. But we will see Danvers in the red and blue, as teased at the very end of the trailer – and also shows glimpses of her in her helmet/mask.

3. Gerontophobia

Captain Marvel sees the invasion of shapeshifting aliens called Skrulls, so we’re guessing that the old lady she punches is really a green-skinned spy in disguise.

Either that, or Carol has a serious phobia of the elderly, which might make her less inclined to save the world in Avengers 4

4. Another Captain Marvel?

British actress Lashana Lynch features in the movie as Maria Rambeau, the mother of Monica Rambeau, another character to go by the title Captain Marvel.

When Larson says, “I’m not what you think I am,” she appears to be standing in front of a short person with curly black hair. Could this be Monica, and indicate that Marvel is already laying the groundwork for another Captain Marvel?

5. Ronan the Accuser

We already knew that Lee Pace would be returning as everyone’s least-favourite MCU villain, Ronan the Accuser from Guardians of the Galaxy.

The film is set before the Kree warlord went rogue, and from the looks of this he will be journeying to Earth in Captain Marvel – presumably on the trail of Skrulls disguised as harmless old women.

6. Memory troubles

“I keep having these memories, I see flashes. I think I had a life here, but I can’t tell if it’s real,” she explains at one point, suggesting that the movie will be as much about Captain Marvel finding herself as it is our introduction to her in the MCU.

In the comics, Captain Marvel once lost her memories because of X-Men‘s Rogue, but we have a feeling it’ll be someone else at fault here – perhaps that machine she’s linked up to at one point.

7. Blockbuster Video

Nothing says Captain Marvel is set in the ’90s like a Blockbuster Video, but wait a minute, after Deadpool 2 brought back the video store for its home release, will the cheeky Marvel anti-hero pop up in Captain Marvel?

No, no he won’t.

Captain Marvel is out on March 8, 2019 in the UK and US.
