Netflix has now announced the release date, cast, trailer, plot for Tales of the City, the upcoming adaptation of the book by Armistead Maupin. Tales of the City has an all-star cast which includes Laura Linney, Ellen Page and Bob the Drag Queen. The trailer for Tales of the City reveals some of the plot and how Netflix has updated the original novel.

When is Tales of the City out?

The release date for Tales of the City on Netflix is Friday, June 7.

They will be released at midnight California time, meaning that UK viewers will be able to watch them from 8am on June 7.

Tales of the City will have 10 episodes, the titles of which have not been revealed yet.

All episodes of the Netflix series are around an hour long and will be released at once onto the streaming service.

Who is in the cast of Tales of the City?

Love Actually’s Laura Linney leads the Tales of the City cast as Mary Ann, a role she played in the original 1993 TV version of the series.

Joining her in the cast of the Netflix series are an all-star cast including Juno’s Ellen Page, Russian Doll’s Charlie Barnett and Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis, also reprising her role from the original series.

The series also stars Murray Bartlett from Looking and RuPaul’s Drag Race stars like Bob the Drag Queen and Katya.

The Tales of the City cast also includes Girls star Zosia Mamet, The Breakfast Club’s Molly Ringwald and The 100’s Christopher Larkin.

What will happen in Tales of the City?

The Netflix plot summary for Tales of the City reads: “Inspired by the books of Armistead Maupin, Netflix Original Limited Series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City begins a new chapter in the beloved story.

“Mary Ann (played by Laura Linney) returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career.

“Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane.”

The series is the fourth TV version of Tales of the City following 1993’s Tales of the City, 1998’s More Tales of the City and 2001’s Further Tales of the City, all of which starred Linney and Dukakis.

Is there a trailer for Tales of the City?

Netflix released a Tales of the City trailer earlier in April.

The Tales of the City promo begins with Mary Ann in a cab driving into San Francisco as the voiceover says: “When I first got off the bus years ago, I had the strangest feeling that I’d come home.”

The preview then shows her reminiscing about her past as well as meeting a whole new generation of LGBTQ+ residents of the area.

The remainder of the trailer gives a glimpse of the love, sex and friendship that viewers will get to see across the Netflix version of Tales of the City.
