GMB: Piers and Susanna pay tribute to coronavirus victims
Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard welcomed Tory MP Andrew Bridgen and Dr Clare Wenham assistant professor of global health policy at London School of Economics to discuss the vaccine row between the EU and AstraZeneca. The EU has urged the firm to use doses produced in Oxford to make up the shortfall after AstraZeneca blamed production issues at European plants for shortages. Reid attempted to put the EU’s argument forward but was shut down by Bridgen.
Reid said: “Andrew Bridgen, it is very easy isn’t it to say look ‘We signed our contract first, we cleared it first, let’s keep all the vaccines for ourselves.’
“But the fact of the matter is the EU did sign a contract with AstraZeneca. It’s not as if they didn’t, there is you would think a contractual obligation for AstraZeneca to provide the doses.
“The trouble is we don’t want them taking away from us. We don’t want to get into a vaccine war here or unpleasant vaccine nationalism but that seems to be what we’re descending into.”
“That’s not the full facts, is it Susanna?” Bridgen hit back. “The fact is we ordered the vaccine three months before the EU.”
