Supergirl's Dreamer actress says becoming TV's first-ever trans superhero is a "game-changer"

Supergirl is going to make history in season 4 by introducing TV’s first trans superhero Dreamer, and the historic nature of that decision isn’t lost on the actress who’s been picked to play her.

Nicole Maines is an actress who rose to international prominence for fighting to overturn a Maine law that blocked transgender people from using the bathroom of their choice.

The 20-year-old has also appeared in Royal Pains, and producers told Entertainment Weekly that it’s her acting that convinced them to hire her to play Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) newest protegé in the fight against the xenophobic Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer).

“I can’t believe we found an actress who just magically has the same effervescence and essence [as Benoist],” producer Jessica Queller said.

For Nicole, she says landing the role of DC Comics hero Dreamer is the fulfilment of a childhood dream.

“When I was younger, if there had been a trans superhero, that would’ve been a game-changer,” she told the magazine.

“Saying it now sounds obvious, but that can be really hard to remember when you’re a trans kid who feels like your world’s been turned upside down.

“Just having someone to see in the media is so empowering and validating.”

Fans have thus far seen Nicole as Dreamer in the character’s civilian identity of young reporter Nia Nal, but the actress is excited for the full reveal of her super-suit later in the season.

“I’ve been trying to conduct myself on set like this isn’t the only thing I’m thinking about, but it’s all I’m thinking about,” she jokes. “That’s when it’ll really sink in that we have a trans superhero.”

Supergirl will return on Sunday, October 14 on The CW in the US. Sky1 airs the show in the UK.
