Supergirl is soaring into the DCEU in the franchise's newest female-led superhero movie

The Man of Steel’s next adventure in the DCEU might be on ice for now, but his cousin is about to make her mark on the DC Universe.

Warner Bros Studios and DC Entertainment have started early development on a brand new Supergirl movie that will be written by The Cloverfield Paradox and 22 Jump Street‘s Oren Uziel, reports TheWrap. The studio is aiming to hire a female director.

Melissa Benoist of the Supergirl TV series will not be playing Kara on the big screen, but the news outlet suggests that the DCEU film will try to match the show’s optimistic and inspiring tone.

Supergirl is the heroic identity of Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Clark Kent (aka Superman). Like her cousin, she survived the destruction of Krypton and escaped to earth as a child.

The character was previously portrayed on the big screen by Helen Slater in a 1984 feature that was notoriously panned upon release, but has gained a cult following in more recent years.

It isn’t known yet if Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman in the new Supergirl movie, but he has been publicly campaigning to return to the DCEU over the last few months.

In April, Cavill said that there’s “lot of story he’d love to tell”, adding: “[If] stuff starts to happen, and with exciting filmmakers who I have close relationships with, then regardless whether I have one more or not, I’m doing it, because I want to tell more of the Superman story.”

Supergirl joins a number of female-centric feature films being developed for the DCEU, including Wonder Woman 1984 and a Birds of Prey movie featuring the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
