Strictly's Dr Ranj says telling his wife he was gay was the 'hardest thing I ever did'

The 39-year-old TV doc was married when he was in his twenties, but his relationship crumbled five years after swapping vows.

Struggling with his sexuality, the TV star found it difficult to admit to his wife that he was gay.
Speaking to Attitude magazine in 2015, Dr Ranj explained how he felt the moment he told his wife the truth.
“I accepted that it wasn't right and it had to end,” he said of his marriage.
“It was so hard and I still don't like thinking about it. I felt like my heart had been wrenched out of my chest,” he said.

“I was completely broken. It was the lowest point in my life. I can only imagine how hard it was for my wife, though – she didn't deserve any of that. I feel so incredibly sorry for what she had to go through,” he explained.

Dr Ranj – who is one of the contestants on the 2018 series of Strictly Come Dancing – has went on to discuss the difficulties he endured after coming out.

The star said he found himself going down a destructive path following the collapse of his marriage – before he found love with a man.

Dr Ranj won’t be dancing with a man on Strictly, however.

Last month, the TV doc expressed frustration that the BBC has banned same sex couples competing on the hit dance show.

He told The Mirror: "I would love to dance with a same sex partner.

“I would value a time when same sex couples could dance on shows like Strictly.

"It is incredibly important. We are making progress but I think there is still some way to go.

"It does take time, though we are heading in the right direction.”

The subject of same-sex couples on Strictly has been debated for years, with previous contestants including Judge Rinder and Rev Richard Coles also calling for the programme to make changes.

However the show announced earlier this month it would sticking to a traditional format.

A spokesperson said at the time: "Strictly has chosen the traditional format of mixed-sex couples and at the moment we have no plans to introduce same-sex couples."

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One on Saturday 8 September 2018 at 7:35pm.
