Strictly Dan Walker says judge told him he would be ‘awful’ before show started

Strictly’s Dan Walker says a BBC judge told him he would be ‘awful’ before the show properly kicked off.

The former BBC Breakfast star competed on the show last year alongside Nadiya Bychkova.

Talking exclusively to the Daily Star at Pride of Britain, he said: "I genuinely thought I would be terrible – I went to Strictly with my daughter this year and Anton [Du Beke] reminded me of what he said during week one – he said to me 'do you remember what I said after your dance?'

"He said 'I thought you would be awful but actually you were ok' – and I said to him 'I do remember that because that was how I felt'. That was the first judges' comments I had got.

He continued: "That was fine though because when you've not got any expectations of where you are going to be good or not and I was with someone who was so good at teaching and I learned so much from her and it was a really positive three months.

"When you go on something like this it's like you're learning a new language, you're not fluent but you can speak it here and there and when someone takes you by the hand you don't have to be scared even though you are tall and awkward still – and people will enjoy you enjoying it, it's quite a game-changing thing."

Later in the chat, he also cheekily revealed why viewers might not want to see his former co-star Louise Minchin in the mornings.

The beloved duo presented BBC Breakfast together for five and a half years before -though they have both now moved on.

Louise left the show in September 2021 following 20 years at the BBC.

However, it wasn't long before Dan, 45, announced his departure in April and hopped over to Channel 5.

Speaking about his close friendship with Louise, 54, he said: "I saw Louise at the NTAs last week or the week before last. I think particularly when you get up at that time in the morning with people you form a really strong friendship."

"If Louise hadn't had her triple espresso at five to six… You don't want to see Louise in the morning before her espresso. Trust me!"
