BBC viewers can look forward to the return of Strictly Come Dancing this autumn, with a whole host of celebrities taking to the dance floor. On Monday (July 19) show bosses announced four new professional dancers would be joining the line-up. One of the newcomers, Kai Widdrington, was interviewed on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday and opened up about his new co-star Giovanni Pernice.

The new Strictly star was welcomed onto BBC Breakfast by hosts Dan Walker and Louise Minchin.

They questioned Kai about his new job and his excitement ahead of the upcoming 2021 season.

“I used to watch the show as a little boy,” the dancer said, revealing that his parents had introduced him to it.

“That’s kind of what got me into dancing in the first place. So they are huge fans of the show.

“They watch every season. So they are over the moon that I’m going to be joining the professional line-up,” he explained.

The presenting pair also grilled Kai about his new Strictly co-star Giovanni.

Dan asked the dancer: “Isn’t your flatmate Giovanni? One of the other pro dancers. So, you are now both Strictly pros.”

Kai laughed: “I know, double whammy now. I get to dance alongside my flatmate. I mean what more could you want?

“But, he’s delighted for me. He was wishing me well yesterday. Obviously he’s known for a little while as well. But he had to kind of, you know, keep it quiet as well.

“Yes, it should be fun sharing the stage with one of your best mates, so that’s an added bonus definitely,” he said.

Louise quizzed him further, asking: “Will there be a sort of healthy competition between the two of you?”

Kai confessed: “A lot of people asked me this yesterday, they were like ‘Are you going to be in competition?’

“I think we’re naturally quite competitive anyway and he’s quite competitive in general.

“But, you know, we just mess around and I think we will, when it comes down to it, I’m sure it’ll be a little bit competitive.

“At the end of the day it will be just fun to share the stage,” he concluded.

Giovanni first appeared on Strictly Come Dancing as a professional dancer in 2015, joining the cast for the thirteenth season.

While Giovanni has never lifted the famous Glitterball Trophy, he’s placed second in the BBC dance contest three times.

He may have extra competition from his flatmate and new pro dancer Kai in the upcoming series of the show.

However, there are usually more professional dancers than celebrities and the BBC have not yet confirmed which dancers will be paired with famous faces.

As a result fans will have to wait to find out if Giovanni and Kai will be battling it out on the show.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One and Strictly Come Dancing is set to return to BBC One this autumn.
