Strictly Come Dancing 2019: AJ Pritchard shuts down Saffron Barker curse rumours

AJ Pritchard, 24, and his Strictly Come Dancing partner Saffron Barker are set to take to the dance floor once again on Saturday night for Movie Week on the hit BBC programme. Ahead of their performance, the pair appeared on Good Morning Britain today where the professional dancer squashed the rumours he and the contestant had been struck by the infamous curse.

Joining hosts Piers Morgan, 54, and Susanna Reid, 48, the pair spoke about what they’d been up to this week in training as they prepare to tackle the Paso Doble.

During the midst of the conversation, Piers interjected and said to AJ: “You’re the dancer, so apparently you’re incredibly popular, I don’t watch Strictly so I wouldn’t know.

“But apparently you’re very popular,” the host remarked, to which the professional dancer replied: “I enjoy the show.

“The thing is I get to dance, I get to choreograph and perform in front of millions of people on Saturday night.”

“It is the dream job,” AJ added, before turning to his celebrity partner, stating: “And this year getting the best partner. Honestly Saffron…”

Before he could continue, Piers interrupted once again and asked: “Are you two at it yet like all the Strictly couples or not?”

In reference to the Strictly curse which has seen contestants and their celebrity partners striking up a romance following their appearance on the show, the controversial host added: “You all end up with the curse, right?”

With the guest nervously laughing at the presenter’s comments, Piers reiterated: “Come on, don’t tell me you haven’t tried?”

As AJ admitted he and Saffron were not in a relationship or had not had any romantic relations, the dancer went on to speak about his girlfriend, Abbie Quinnen, 23.

Piers asked the professional dancer: “And how does she feel about you dancing with a hot blonde?”

The Strictly star replied: “She is a hot blonde also, so I’m very happy.”

“Is she not worried about you guys nestling into each other for hour on end everyday?” the host probed.

It’s the profession

Hitting back at the suggestions of romantic relations between himself and Saffron, AJ told the host: “It’s the profession Piers.

“Obviously if you want to make it work, you do 12 hours a day in the studio. You want to perform fantastic for 12 million people live on Saturday night.”

The host agreed with the professional dancer’s point of view, telling AJ: “Ok, you’ve got a point.”

Speculation about a romantic connection between the two hit the headlines last weekend after pictures obtained by The Mirror showed the pair leaving training together.

As they crossed the street, AJ could be seen putting his arm around Saffron’s shoulder as the pair were seen smiling at something the YouTuber was showing him on her phone.

A spokesperson shut down any speculation at the time, telling the MailOnline: “AJ and Saffron are great friends and have been training really hard for their performance on Saturday evening – this is clearly ONLY what these pictures show.

“They are loving the competition and cannot wait to perform their Cha-Cha to the nation.”

AJ and Saffron were saved by the public during the first elimination, which saw James Cracknell, 47, bow out of the competition.
