Stranger Things season 4: Will Byers’ struggle with sexuality revealed in season 3 notes

Stranger Things viewers have learned a lot about each of the characters so far in the first three seasons and they could be about to learn a lot more.

While each of the main boys have seen a lot of progression thus far, the topic of Will Byers’ (played by Noah Schnapp) sexuality has come up time and again.

Season one saw Jim Hopper (David Harbour) asking Will’s mother, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) if he was gay, and the latest season saw Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) alluding to the character being gay as well.

The subject has never been truly addressed, but the original script which the show’s creators – the Duffer Brothers – showed off whilst pitching may have made things a little clearer.

According to Screen Rant, the Stranger Things “bible” detailed each of the characters before getting into the nitty gritty of the series as a whole.

Will’s introduction reads: “WILL BYERS, twelve, is a sweet, sensitive kid with sexual identity issues.”

This sentence certainly teases a storyline which has yet come to pass, but viewers shouldn’t get too hopeful, as this tome has indeed changed a lot since its initial scribing.

Will’s description goes on to say: “He only recently came to the realisation that he does not fit into 1980s definition of ‘normal.’ His innocent choices, such as his colourful clothes, prove a constant source of bullying.

“Like Mike, Will escapes through fantasy gaming, where he can be himself, uninhibited.

“He has a close relationship with his mother, Joyce. His brother, Jonathan, helps raise him in lieu of their father, who abandoned them four years ago.”

Viewers need not feel frustrated, however, as Mike star Finn recently told The Hollywood Reporter even he doesn’t know the truth about Will.

Speaking about the scene which saw Mike shouting “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls” at Will, Finn explained: “I don’t even know if it had to do with Will’s sexuality.

“It’s all up to the Duffers and what they want to do.”

Meanwhile, fans of the show have been theorising over how Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) could regain her powers after losing them in the season three finale.

Viewers believe Kali – otherwise known as Eight (Linnea Berthelsen) – is the key to getting Eleven her powers back, after she was last seen in Chicago in season two.

Reddit user JediSabre theorised Mike and Eleven would venture to Chicago to find Kali, and question her over how the powers came about.

The user wrote: “[Kali’s] been on the hunt for Dr Brenner since she was told he was alive.

“Mike wants to help her find Brenner so he can confront him about the chemicals they used on Eleven.”

They later added: “Mike will figure out where Brenner is and desert the party to go with Kali, who will want to kill him. But Mike will interfere.”

With Eleven’s powers gone, so too is Hawkins’ only defence against the Mind Flayer if he returns to wreak havoc once again – so could regaining these powers be the key to their survival?

Stranger Things series 3 is now available to stream on Netflix.
