Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Steph McGovern has been providing laughs, intriguing debate and, at times, tears in her Channel 4 talk Steph’s Packed Lunch. Every weekday afternoon at 12:30pm, fans have been used to tuning in to see the former BBC Breakfast host pick apart the latest headlines with an all-star panel as well as offer tips and tricks on home-cooking, gardening and bargain-hunting to name a few. Express.co.uk caught up with the show’s resident bargain finder Mr Carrington to discuss his time on the show and his thoughts on its current hiatus off the air.

Earlier this month, Steph announced on Packed Lunch she was going to be taking some time away from presenting the show to enjoy some time to herself.

There is some good news for fans as Steph confirmed the show would be back on September 6, putting any speculation about the Packed Lunch’s future to bed.

Mr Carrington has been a regular feature on the programme and admitted he has “loved” working with the presenter during the series’ run on Channel 4.

“I love working with Steph,” Mr Carrington said at this year’s National Reality TV Awards. “She is such a delight to work with.

“She is the most professional person and she just creates an amazing atmosphere in the studio. She’s a powerhouse.”

When asked if he was gutted not to be able to appear on the show as it remains off-air over the summer, the bargain hunter simply replied: “Steph deserves a holiday.”

He continued: “She works every single day. She’s having a break now but I even think she’s probably still working.”

So what’s his favourite part about working on Packed Lunch? “I just love finding bargains for her to inspect every week!”

The Packed Lunch star added: “I try to find her a new handbag every week for a bargain price (laughs), but she’s just incredible she really is.”

Steph’s show is no stranger to hitting headlines but arguably none was bigger than when comedian Joe Lycett staged a storm-off last month.

“I saw it on social media but when (the secret) was all out,” Mr Carrington said of the talked-about moment.

“I missed the whole shebang but she played it so, so well,” he added before musing Steph may have even been acting during some of his own segments.

“So now I’m wondering does Steph always like the bargains that I show (laughs),” he joked.

When Packed Lunch does return in September, it sounds like it won’t just be Mr Carrington happy to see the show back.

After the announcement of the summer break was published on Twitter, several fans weighed in with their dismay.

“Oh nooooo,” one fan replied. “What am I going to do without #stephspackedlunch on a lunchtime?” (Sic).

A second thanked Steph, tweeting: “@PackedLunchC4 THANK YOU for the past 10 months of fabulous lunchtime programmes, helping us get through these difficult times. Have a great Summer.”

“Gutted [sad emoji] such a fun colourful show,” a third deflated Channel 4 viewer weighed in.

“Arggggghhh ! I’m gonna have to go outside now.  Miss you SPL,” said a fourth.

While a fifth sent their support: “Great looking forward to your return. Have a super Summer too. X.”

Steph’s Packed Lunch returns to Channel 4 at 12:30pm on September 6.
