Star Trek: Discovery's first mini-episode 'Runaway' unleashes a spooky trailer

We may have to wait until January 2019 for Star Trek: Discovery season two, but it was announced last week that CBS is at least bridging the gap with a new series of shorts.

There will be four Star Trek: Short Treks in all, each focusing on a single Discovery character – Mary Wiseman’s Tilly, Doug Jones’ Saru, Rainn Wilson’s Harry Mudd and a new character called Craft who’s played by Aldis Hodge.

The bad news? Netflix doesn’t currently have any plans to stream them in the UK. The good news? You can, however, watch the spooky trailer for first short ‘Runaway’ below, as Tilly encounters a mysterious visitor.

‘Runaway’ will drop on CBS All Access in the US next Thursday, October 4. Maja Vrvilo directed the short, which was written by Jenny Lumet and Discovery’s co-creator Alex Kurtzman.

A new episode will roll out every month, ending with ‘The Escape Artist’ on Thursday, January 3.

Here are the full details of all four Star Trek: Short Treks, which will vary between 10-15 minutes in length:

‘Runaway’ – Thursday, October 4

“Onboard the USS Discovery, Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.”

‘Calypso’ – Thursday, November 8

“After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an AI computer interface.”

‘The Brightest Star – Thursday, December 6

“Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru (Doug Jones) lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.”

‘The Escape Artist – Thursday, January 3

“Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship — just in time to try out his latest con.”

Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in the UK.
