Spoilers: Engagement shock as Maria accepts Gary's proposal in Corrie

Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) has had her doubts about boyfriend Gary Windass’ (Mikey North) ability to turn his back on his dodgy dealings in Coronation Street — what with him having a reputation as a loan shark — but it appears as if she’s ready to put her trust in him, as the pair get engaged in the coming episodes.

Maria’s relationship with Gary has caused controversy among the residents of Weatherfield — all of whom were shocked that the hairdresser would enter into a romance with someone as dodgy as Gary considering what he’s put the street through in recent months.

Nonetheless, Maria has stuck by her beau, but tragedy struck when she lost her baby several weeks back — and the pair subsequently fell out after Gary punched an unsuspecting Daniel (Rob Mallard).

There’s more conflict ahead this week when Maria begins to suspect that Gary is up to his old tricks once more, and she grows closer to Ali (James Burrows) as a result, but little does she know that his questionable behaviour is a result of his quest to buy her an engagement ring.

Coronation Street has now revealed that — in the coming episodes — Maria and Gary become engaged.

After doing so, the couple announce their news to a number of the street’s residents — and it’s news which received a divided response.

With Ali present as the news is announced, will things remain civil between he and Gary?

Or will Ali inform his archenemy of the night of passion he’s spent with Maria?

Coronation Street continues Monday 10 February at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
