Sir David Attenborough swaps BBC for Netflix as he narrates new doc Our Planet

The BBC man, 92, hopes the series, Our Planet, will inspire mankind to look after the planet.

He will lend his voice to the eight-part series filmed in 50 countries in all continents across four years.

It will premiere on the streaming service on April 5, 2019, in more than 190 countries.

The show has been described by Netflix as "ambitious".

Sir David, 92, said: "Our Planet will take viewers on a spectacular journey of discovery showcasing the beauty and fragility of our natural world."

He added: ""We have become the greatest threat to the health of our home. We need the world to pay attention."

More than 600 members of crew captured more than three-and-a-half thousand filming days, including locations such as the remote Arctic wilderness and the vast landscapes of Africa.

Netflix hopes that a partnership with WWF will inspire viewers to learn more about the natural world.

Director Alastair Fothergill said: "Our Planet is our most ambitious endeavour to date, we hope it will inspire and delight hundreds of millions of people across the world.

"By launching on Netflix at the same time all over the world, this series will enable people to connect to and understand the shared responsibility we all have."

Colin Butfield, executive director of WWF UK added: "Our Planet will showcase the wonders of our world at the critical time when we need global action to protect it."

The announcement of Sir David's new role on the Netflix programme comes just days before his latest series Dynasties begins on Sunday on BBC One.
