Simon Cowell reveals how he consoled Susan Boyle after BGT defeat to Diversity

Simon Cowell has revealed that he feared the Britain’s Got Talent final would be too much for Susan Boyle back in 2009 and how he consoled the star after she was beaten by Diversity.

The music mogul appeared on Lorraine today and remembered Sue’s performance of I Dreamed A Dream, which immediately went viral and propelled the Glaswegian diva to global levels of superstardom.

‘At this point she’s in the final and we thought she was going to win,’ the 58-year-old said during today’s Lorraine.

‘I’ll never forget it and then they said, “The winner is Diversity.” I was on that stage in under 20 seconds, saying to her, “We’ve got an album deal.”

‘Literally in that moment and then on, “You make an album when you want to make an album.”’

It’s been 10 years since the 58-year-old was beaten by Diversity in one of the biggest upsets throughout the show’s history. Although, she’s since gone on to sell more than 25 million albums and is worth an estimated £12 million so she’s doing ok.

And to mark a decade in the industry, in 2019 she’ll not only be releasing her eighth studio album, but she also recreated the moment she met Simon, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan for an upcoming episode of Britain’s Got Talent.

But this weekend it’s all about the BGT class of 2019 as more entertainers perform for judges Simon, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.

Among them is ‘the most dangerous act’ Simon has ever seen across any Got Talent shows as two Armenian swordsmen, The Vardanyan Brothers, try to pull off the unthinkable.

Simon even came close to pulling the performance altogether.

On a lighter note, David admitted he burst into tears of joy – a first during his time on the panel – which subsequently opened the floodgates for Amanda and Alesha too.

Britain’s Got Talent returns to ITV Saturday night at 7.15pm while Lorraine airs weekdays at 8.30am on the same channel.
