Shirtless singer branded "overconfident" after cringeworthy moment during X Factor auditions

This evening’s (September 15) X Factor conjured up a host of memorable performances, but it was singer Scott Wilkes who created the most cringeworthy moment.

Hailing from Birmingham, the dashing fella strutted on stage absorbing the energy of the crowd with a huge grin plastered on his face.

The confidence was palpable, but would he deliver the musical goods?

Choosing to perform a swing number, Scott also found time to interact with the audience, which is something of a recurring theme during the auditions this series.

However, his insistence on involving the crowd took an extremely awkward turn.

“Ladies and gents I’ve got a quick question for you this evening,” he asked. “Give me a cheer if you want me to take my shirt off.”

A heavy silence descended upon the room, with judges Simon Cowell, Louis Tomlinson and Robbie Williams all looking at each other in confusion and disappointment.

Scott further pleaded with the audience,”Are you sure?” before unbuttoning his shirt completely and whipping it off.

Those watching at home were clearly unimpressed by the lad’s muscular display, deeming the whole experience “cringey” and “awkward”, as you can see below from a range of tweets.

The X Factor continues tomorrow (September 16) at 8pm on ITV.
