Saved by the Bell was almost turned into a Broadway musical

Hey, hey, hey, hey! It turns out a Saved By The Bell musical was once a very strong possibility.

According to popstar Debbie Gibson, the classic ’90s teen comedy was in the early stages of a theatre adaptation at one point.

Apparently talked up by producers, the plans were to include Gibson as composer, but they got shelved once series executive producer Linda Mancuso died in 2003 after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

When asked which series from the ’90s she’d like to resurrect, Gibson told EW: “‘Oh, my God, that is so fun!’ Wait, was Saved by the Bell in the ’90s? The first thing that popped into my head would be Saved by the Bell.

“I was actually at one point turning it into a musical. So I would say bring it back and turn it into a really kitschy, catchy musical [Laughs].”

According to Gibson, she and producers “had talked about composing and writing lyrics” and recently found a draft of the script in her garage after a move.

“I went, ‘Oh my god, this is still a great idea,'” said Gibson. “People love nostalgia. It’s not happening, but we’re re-opening it [with this conversation].”

Saved by the Bell originally ran for four series from 1989 to 1992.

It starred a closeknit group of high school friends as they tried to make it through their teens in California.
