Riverdale had to finish its fourth season earlier than expected so the last few episodes weren’t shot or aired. The storylines which have been left uncompleted will instead make up the beginning of series five which The CW drama has now started shooting. But could there be a shocking death in store for fans when the series does return?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Riverdale.

Riverdale fans already know season five will start off with prom and graduation before the Core Four leaves their high school days behind for good.

Once they do leave, there is going to be a seven-year time jump so viewers will get to see what Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) as adults.

Some details of what fans can expect from the new episodes have already been revealed.

This includes what Archie will be doing once he leaves Riverdale High.

Will Archie be killed off in Riverdale?

Last month, the show’s call sheet had details of new characters they want to introduce.

One in particular shows that during the time jump, Archie joined the army.

Describing the red head’s new friend Eric Jackson, the call sheet reads: “Male, 20s. Open ethnicity. A veteran who lost his leg and suffered third-degree burns while fighting in the Army with Archie.

“Ironically, Eric joins Archie to help run the fire department in Riverdale.

“But Eric is still dealing with his own trauma, which leads him into a darker place.

“ACTORS WHO ARE LEG AMPUTEES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT… RECURRING GUEST STAR.”

However, a tweet has hinted how Archie himself could actually be killed in action.

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre Sacasa said: “The #Riverdale Players Theatre continues with our next two table reads today via Zoom!! As we say goodbye to high school and hello to…???”

Along with the caption, Sacasa posted the front of two scripts which give an insight into what is going to happen.

The first one is entitled Graduation and has an Archie Comics image of the gang in their gowns, smiling and enjoying their milkshakes.

But the second one shows a far more deadlier plot is looming.

The next image shows one episode will be called Purgatory and the image includes what looks like Jughead, Betty and Veronica bowing their heads in mourning by a gravestone.

There is also an eery image in the sky of a red-headed solider which presumably is Archie.

As the episode is called Purgatory, this could mean Archie is believed to be dead and this is what brings the rest of the gang together after seven years.

But will Archie really die for his country when Riverdale returns for season five?

Archie joining the army isn’t the only big revelation to come in the new series.

Jughead will have a new girlfriend called Jessica so him and Betty didn’t stay together after leaving school.

Veronica will also be married to a Chad Gekko who is very similar to her father.

So far though, details of what happened to Betty have remained a secret so fans will have to wait until the series is released to find out her fate.

Riverdale is available to watch on Netflix.
