Tiffany Moon is speaking out about her experience with racism.
During Tuesday's episode of The Real Housewives of Dallas, the newest Housewife — an anesthesiologist who immigrated from China to the United States as a child — opened up about how she's encountered racism in her workplace amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a candid conversation with costar Brandi Redmond — who apologized to Tiffany in last week's season 5 premiere for racially insensitive comments she had made in a resurfaced video — Tiffany got emotional about a heartbreaking moment she had with a patient.
"The racism I've experienced is so much worse beyond that," Tiffany told Brandi. "A few weeks ago in the hospital, you won't even believe this, I tried to take care of a patient and they said, 'Can I have a new doctor that doesn't have coronavirus?' First I was mad and then I was sad. I'm a strong woman, I'm a doctor, I empower other women. But there's still that sad girl inside me every day."
After Brandi acknowledged Tiffany's pain, the two hugged it out while Brandi continued to apologize.
"There is just so much racism going on right now, let's use this opportunity to educate one another and have an open dialogue," said Tiffany.
"Asians are sometimes considered the model minority because we tend not to make a stink about things," Tiffany told cameras. "I think the time has come for Asians, for Black people, for everyone to speak out. This is America. It's 2020. We can do better."
During last week's premiere, Brandi opened up about her struggle with suicidal thoughts after a racially insensitive video surfaced at the beginning of 2020 in which she appeared to mock Asians.
"The reaction of people was to cancel me, that I was a horrible person, a horrible mother," Brandi said. "I went away for treatment because I was suicidal. I had so much guilt and shame. I needed help."
During a get together at Stephanie Hollman's house, Tiffany pulled Brandi aside to have a private conversation about the incident.
"I don't want you to think that I'm coming at you or attacking you," Tiffany said. "But I think that I would be remiss if I just sat silently. This is my opportunity to tell that what you did was wrong. It hurt a lot of people's feelings. It was in poor taste."
"I was ignorant and I was insensitive, and I made a mistake," Brandi admitted.
Tiffany decided to share her story with her costar. "When I was 3 years old, my parents immigrated to America without me. They left me behind to have the opportunity for a better life," she said. "From the time I was 3 until the time I was 6, I didn't see my parents. They left me with my grandparents."
"When I was 6, they put me on a plane from Beijing to New York by myself," she continued. "I landed in America to see my parents. I didn't see them for three years. I knew not a lick of English. I went to school and people did this thing to me."
On Tuesday's episode, Brandi apologized again — which Tiffany accepted.
