Rumor has it that the ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ actor was a frontrunner for the lead role of Hal Jordan until he dropped out of the running.
A few months ago, reports surfaced saying that Tom Cruise was eyed to play the new Green Lantern in a planned reboot. Confirming the reports, Crazy Days and Nights now says that the A-list actor was indeed wanted to star in the project called “Green Lantern Corps“.
According to the site, the “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” star was the frontrunner for the lead role of Hal Jordan and was in talks with Warner Bros. about starring in the new adaptation of DC comics. The site also reported that the character was going to be killed off in the script.
That apparently put Cruise off. He reportedly would only do the movie if the script was changed, which didn’t happen. Thus, he allegedly dropped out of the running and didn’t want to be involved in the superhero film project.
Rumors about Cruise’s possible involvement in the DC movie first surfaced last year. It was said that WB tried to recruit the three-time Golden Globe Award winner by bringing Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie as director for the “Green Lantern” reboot. Cruise and McQuarrie have worked together on several films, including “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation“, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and “Jack Reacher“.
The new Green Lantern movie is said to feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two two famous iterations of Green Lantern in the franchise. A brief logline for the movie reportedly read, “Former test pilot Hal Jordan, now a veteran of the intergalactic group of protectors of peace and justice known as the Green Lantern Corps, mentors young recruit John Stewart.”
Besides Cruise, Joel McHale, Bradley Cooper, Armie Hammer and Jake Gyllenhaal were reportedly considered for the role of Hal Jordan. Ryan Reynolds previously played the character in the 2011 film, which was a bomb critically and financially.
