Queen of the South: Alice Braga teases season five filming
Hemky Madera’s role as Pote Galvez has been one of the best parts of crime series Queen of the South ever since his introduction in the first season. Before the show makes its long awaited return to the USA Network and Netflix, the star has revealed some surprising insight into his early audition process.
Main cast member Hemky Madera confirmed he originally auditioned for the role of Teresa Mendoza’s (played by Alice Braga) father for hit series Queen of the South.
After minor appearances in the first season, his character Pote Galvez has become one of Teresa’s closest allies during the fight to keep her drug operation on top.
Now the queen’s most loyal sicario, Pote will be instrumental next season as Teresa prepares to take vengeance on Judge Lafayette (Cecil Andrew) for the murder of her godson.
However, Dominican-American star Hemky Madera told a surprising story when he recently opened up about his initial audition process for Queen of the South.

Speaking to Daily Actor, he revealed: “I was originally called for her dad.”
Fans of the show will know Teresa’s father has yet to make an appearance or even be named throughout Queen of the South’s four seasons.
Despite this, Madera claimed the series could have gone in a completely different direction had his first audition gone differently.
He continued: “I went in, I had been trying to get into the casting office for years, and never the right role, or they just didn’t even see me.”
“They brought me in, I knew I was too young for it. I knew I was just way too young, but I said, ‘Let me just do my best, and see what happens.’”
Now 43, the actor would have been in his late 30s at the time of auditioning, and didn’t quite fit the bill for the role of Teresa’s dad.
Auditions had been tough on the rising star in the past, but luckily the show’s producers took a chance on Hemky Madera and offered him a chance to read for a different part.
Madera explained: “A few days later, they called me, and they said, ‘All right, Hemky. We want you to put yourself on tape for the role of Pote.”

“‘You’re going to have to do it on tape because the producers, the show runners, are going to be on location scouting in Mexico.’ So, I did it the day before Thanksgiving.”
The sudden callback may have come to a surprise for the Queen of the South breakout, but luckily he was able to deliver and the rest is history.
Pote Galvez is now one of fans’ favourite aspects of the cartel drama, and his appearances have increased exponentially in later seasons thanks to overwhelmingly positive audience feedback.
Hemky Madera confirmed he’ll be reprising his role as filming continues for the fifth season following delays in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
Finally, he added: “One thing that I’ve learned through the years is never give up. You never know what could happen.”
Season five is promising big things for Teresa’s ongoing drug war in New Orleans, and fans have their eyes peeled to see how Pote’s new romance with Kelly Anne Van Awken (Molly Burnett) will develop.
Since landing the role of Pote Galvez, Hemky Madera has the potential to become a major screen presence, and has since appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming and had a recurring role on comedy series Brockmire.
Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
