Queen of the South fans were shocked to see James Valdez (played by Peter Gadiot) show up at the end of season four when he hadn’t been any of the previous episodes that series. Why he made a comeback though has left fans wondering what drama lies ahead for queenpin Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga).

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.

In Queen of the South season four, episode 13, Vienen Por Ti., Teresa and the rest of her inner circle were at the warehouse.

Everything seemed to have calmed down after they had finally been able to negotiate a deal with Russian dealer Oksana Volkova (Vera Cherny).

Then out of nowhere, a car frantically drove up and James stumbled out with his shirt covered in blood.

Checking to see if he was alright, Teresa ran over to James and before she could ask him where he has been, he said she was in danger.

Fans will just have to wait until the show returns for series five though to find out the reason for the warning.

Will James Valdez be in Queen of the South season 5?

Queen of the South was renewed for season five earlier this year and started filming in March.

The series then had to be shut down because of the pandemic and the cast and crew have only been back on set for the past few weeks.

Despite James making a dramatic return at the end of series four, viewers have been questioning if he will return full time to the drama.

Now, showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez has answered the question everyone has been asking.

Taking to Twitter yesterday (November 4), Rodriguez said: “I know it’s the election and everybody’s laser focused on it, but I feel like a lot of #QueenoftheSouth fans only care about one thing…YES, JAMES IS IN S5.”

Rodriguez then joked: “U think we’d have him in the S4 finale just to kill him off? Do u think we are barbarians?”

So James will be back for series five much to viewers’ excitement after he left to work for the CIA.

But in reality, there was another reason for James’ sudden departure from Queen of the South.

Actor Peter Gadiot who portrays James in the USA Network drama wanted to pursue new projects and luckily, the creators of Queen of the South allowed him the freedom to do so.

Opening up to EW, showrunner Ben Lobato said: “We wanted James to be in season 4, but Peter had some other things that he wanted to explore creatively, so he went off and did that.

“What that was done, he came back around and told us he was available.

“We decided to get him back in and set him up for season 5 and let’s go. “Things weren’t completely planned out this way, it was something that happened through the season.

“We’re so grateful that it did, and we’re so happy to have him back.”

Even though James is going to be in series five, this doesn’t mean he will be safe.

As fans know all too well, popular characters can be killed off at any moment in the drama.

This includes Brenda Parra (Justina Machado), Tony Parra (Adolfo Alvarez), Guero Davilas (Jon Ecker) and Don Epifanio (Joaquim de Almeida) just to name a few.

So will James’ name be added to the list of casualties in Teresa’s rise to the top?

Queen of the South is available to watch on Netflix.
