Queen of the South season 5: James ‘to escape’ cartel life ‘Redeemed himself’

Queen of the South: Alice Braga teases season five filming

Dailyn Rodriguez recently took to Twitter to chat with Queen of the South fans about the thrilling crime drama’s upcoming fifth season. One insightful conversation may have sealed the fate of James Valdez (played by Peter Gadiot) ahead of the new season’s release on the USA Network and Netflix.

Ruthless sicario and drug dealer James Valdez may have completely abandoned his life of crime in the upcoming fifth season of Queen of the South.

The development seemed to be confirmed by the showrunner for the series herself, Dailyn Rodriguez, during a recent Twitter Q&A.

When fans asked about his evolving relationship with queenpin Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga, Rodriguez claimed James had been completely redeemed from his past actions.

James’ return at the end of season four blindsided viewers following his apparent departure from the series in the third instalment.

However, it’s still unclear if Teresa’s former partner has come back to rejoin her growing empire in New Orleans, or if he’ll be working against her.

His return could mean their old boss, Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón), is back on the scene for season four.

Additionally, comments from Rodriguez also hint he’ll be working on the side of the law, or at least helping Teresa escape the clutches of Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) in the new season.

Production is currently underway in the Big Easy, but the showrunner took some time to answer her followers’ most pressing questions about season five.

During a chat with a number of inquisitive viewers, one fan hit upon the question of James’s morality and how it could affect his relationship with Teresa.

They commented: “I hope we get more insight into their relationship, to be honest it sometimes leaves me confused!

“Maybe it’s because they’re two very complicated and traumatized people? Nonetheless the acting is brilliant.”

To which Rodriguez responded: “It’s supposed to leave you confused. I mean they started in a super toxic place.”

The head writer went on to remind the fan that James forced Teresa to swallow bags of cocaine during one of their earliest reactions at the start of the series.

James eventually developed feelings for his partner, but their relationship started in a troubling place as he was initially Teresa’s handler.

Now Teresa has grown from a low-level runner to a powerful drug mogul, they could rekindle their romance on a more equal playing field.

“Would you say the character has redeemed himself or not at all?” the same fan asked.

Dailyn Rodriguez then replied to the Twitter user and insisted: “100% has redeemed himself.”

Another fan pointed out a key line of dialogue to support this, adding: “I can see this. ‘From the moment I met you, I’ve been trying to keep you alive..” still holds true.”

Unfortunately, while James might be finding a way out of the cartel, Teresa could be too wrapped up in the war for the streets of New Orleans to escape her life of crime.

Season five is expected to make its way to screens later this year, so Queen of the South fans are keeping their eyes open for updates on when they can expect to see the fallout of the last season.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
