Before he’s a psychopath who often gets on Batman’s nerves, Joker is an entertainer in the upcoming Todd Phillips-directed movie. Joaquin Phoenix showed the other side of his character during the filming on Monday afternoon, September 24 in Brooklyn, New York.

As seen in newly-surfaced set photos, the actor dressed in full clown costume while filming a scene in a phone booth. He’s almost unrecognizable, sporting a clown makeup and green wig while making a phone call. The actor also wore a checkered shirt and orange vest, with a red flower brooch pinned on his suit near his chest.

On the same day, director Todd Phillips took to his Instagram account to share another official photo showing Phoenix in a similar clown costume. The picture revealed the full clown ensemble, which included a small round hat, a red nose, burgundy pants as well as red-and-blue shoes.

An origin story of the signature villain of Batman, “Joker” is described as a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale of a man disregarded by society who becomes the ultimate supervillain. The film depicts the titular character as a failed stand-up comedian who goes insane and becomes a murdering psychopath.

Zazie Beetz, Brett Cullen, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Robert De Niro, Shea Whigham, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Douglas Hodge and Josh Pais also star in the movie. Phillips wrote the script and also serves as producer along with Martin Scorsese and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. The DC-Warner Bros. movie is scheduled for an October 4, 2019 release in the United States.

The movie is currently looking for extras for filming in the New Jersey area. According to the casting call, these extras will take part during the filming in Jersey City on September 30 and November 9, as well as Newark on October 15 and 16.
