Power season 6 casts American Crime Story actor as powerful new character

The currently in-production Power season six has added some new series regulars to its cast – enter Evan Handler, Monique Gabriela Curnen and Mike Dopud.

Power‘s fifth season may have proven divisive among fans, but the show is already looking to ensure season six gets it back on top form with some new additions to the regular cast.

Both Dopud and Curnen have previously appeared in recurring roles in both seasons four and five, but American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson star Evan Handler is a totally new addition to the crime drama.

Handler has signed on to play Jacob Warner, the new US Attorney for the Eastern District, according to Deadline. Warner has been brought in to clean up a great deal of mess but the description adds that he’s “not built to play nice”.

Described as “formidable and powerful”, Warner will use the position and authority of the role to challenge those around him to get answers.

And Handler has good practice in the role too, as he previously played attorney Alan Dershowitz, an advisor to OJ’s defence team during the trial, in Ryan Murphy’s brilliant The People vs OJ Simpson.

Some viewers may also recognise him from his time on Californication, where he played the hilariously unfortunate Charlie Runkle opposite David Duchovny.

Meanwhile, Power fans will already know Dopud as the Serbian crime lord Jason Micic, who’s now looking to expand his network on both coasts, while Curnen will return as Blanca Rodriquez, the incorruptible NYPD Internal Affairs investigator who’s been making waves in the show.

Executive producer Courtney Kemp has previously defended the show’s narrative growth and change of direction, noting: “You could not go back to the tone of the earlier seasons once that child was killed.

“So in terms of the plotting and juggling all these different elements and bringing them all together, that’s what we do best as a show.”

She also shared a message for those viewers who may think of Power as somewhat one-dimensional.

“I think people who watch the show who just like to see guns and drugs, that’s always going to be an element,” she said. “But it isn’t really what the show is about, nor has it ever been.”

Power airs on Starz in the US, with Netflix airing new episodes in the UK.
