Piers Morgan shouts down ex-prisoner jailed for taking 290 tablets into Egypt

Piers Morgan questioned Brit Laura Plummer’s innocence in tense scenes on Good Morning Britain.

Shouty Piers said the sheer number of tramadol in Laura’s luggage was "odd" and said certain people thought Laura "knew exactly what she was up to."

The 34-year-old said a friend from work offered her the painkiller when she explained how her partner Omar Caboo suffers from back muscle spasms, and wanted to try and help him.

Laura said she barely even knew she had been arrested until days into her ordeal, where she eventually was moved to a prison in Cairo where she shared a space with 200 other women.

But Piers was confused as to why she would bring so many tablets with her on holiday, explaining that some people would not believe her story of why she had the drugs in the country.

He said: "I do find it very strange that someone who is clearly not a stupid woman, that somebody would take 290 prescription pills to a country where everyone knows you don’t take stuff like that into countries like Egypt."

To this, Laura said she "really didn’t think she was doing anything wrong."

She explained: "I was talking to my friend and she asked what he was taking and she said, ‘Oh I can get you something stronger.’"

But even this comment confused Piers, as he continued to question her.

He said: "This is where I find it a bit odd – if you were getting pain relief you wouldn’t get enough to take a pharmacy, didn’t you think it was a bit weird? You had 290.

"I’ve had 5 different ailments in the last few weeks, if you totalled up all the medication iI’ve had the last five weeks, it’s probably a quarter of what I’ve had.

"If I was given that amount for a muscle spasm – it’s not right."

When asked what was the hardest part of her experience, where she was jailed for a year with 200 women in Cairo, he said: "When I saw two girls getting tortured with sticks and thought, ‘Why am I in the same room with these people? I should’nt be here.

"It’s weird because there you don’t trust anybody – they all lie… I just wanted to get a real nice bath. Everything here is so clean and nice and I’ve been so dirty.

"There’s only five toilets in Cairo for 200 women, I had to have a shower with a jug with a hole in the floor."

Piers did not seem entirely certain of her, still, and said some people may believe she and her friend "knew exactly what they were up to."

But Laura denied this vehemently, adding: "These people need to speak to other people who actually know us and know the kind of person I am and she is – at the time she was doing a kind gesture."

She did add that her mate had later accused her of stealing the tablets, and would have some "big questions" to ask when she gets back.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
