Phillip Schofield and Kevin Clifton defend Stacey Dooley amid Comic Relief 'white saviour' race row and insists 'colour is irrelevant'

The documentary-maker, 31, is currently embroiled in a row with Tottenham MP David Lammy after he told her she's perpetuating a harmful narrative with her Comic Relief charity work.

This Morning host Phillip said the suggestion Stacey shouldn't help because she is white was "racist", while Strictly star Kevin told David he was "so wrong".

The journalist sparked a backlash after sharing pictures of herself helping disadvantaged African children for a new documentary that focuses on malaria and neonatal clinics.

But her efforts were slammed by some of Stacey's fans, as well as activism group No White Saviors and MP David, who claimed her work was doing more harm than good.

Debating the issue with Vanessa Feltz on today's This Morning, Phillip blasted the claims and threw his support behind Stacey.

He raged: "What has colour got to do with any of this? You're well meaning but then you think I can't go there because I'm white, I can't do this charity video because I'm white – that in itself is racist.

His comment came after Vanessa pointed out that if a white person were to visit a poorer area of the UK and have a picture with a black child it would be "weird", adding Comic Relief's methods need to be "better thought through".

Phil continued to rant: "Aren't we all trying to get to a world where we don't think about colour.

"Colour is irrelevant and what I want to do is to help you regardless of colour and the fact that Comic Relief exists for Africa is because there is an enormous amount of money here that can go to do something good.

"Now, if Africa was fully helping that community then fantastic. This is a well off Western nation."

His sentiment was echoed by Stacey's Strictly partner and friend Kevin, who hit out at David on Twitter.

He told the politician: " Im sorry but @DavidLammy u r so wrong on this. What are your priorities?

"Some are in desperate need of help. If people are in a position to raise money and awareness why should they not just because they are white? You just can’t win for trying to help."

Stacey also hit back at David's comments on Wednesday, tweeting the MP: "David, is the issue with me being white? (Genuine question) …because if that’s the case, you could always go over there and try raise awareness?

"Comic relief have raised over 1 billion pounds since they started. I saw projects that were saving lives with the money. Kids lives."
