PETA calls for Alpha boycott over alleged animal deaths

PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is very famously vocal about the treatment of animals in the media and this is no exception.

The group is calling for the total boycott of the new film Alpha, over the alleged death of multiple bison.

PETA’s senior VP Lisa Lange said in a statement: “Five sensitive bison lost their lives, all so that their bodies could be used as props in this wholly forgettable flick.

“PETA is calling on the public to show Hollywood that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated by refusing to buy a ticket to Alpha.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the film was the subject of an investigation back in 2016, when the slaughtered animals were used as part of the filming. It’s believed the wrangler on the set was overseen by the American Humane Association.

The publication reports a source as saying that animals were not slaughtered solely for use in the film, which would be classed as inhumane, and that the filmmakers contacted a company to purchase the carcasses.

Apparently, the breach of AHA guidelines was all down to a miscommunication, and the filmmakers had not authorised anything intentionally inhumane.

Alpha, which stars X-Men: Apocalypse actor Kodi Smit-McPhee, is released in the US this coming Friday (August 17) and in the UK next Friday (August 24).
