Peaky Blinders season 5: Who does Sam Claflin play in the new series? Star drops hint

Peaky Blinders season five sees actor Sam Claflin join the cast of the hit BBC drama series. When the casting was announced it was revealed he would play MP Oswald Mosley in the show, but very little else about his role. However, in a new interview, the actor recently hinted his character’s introduction could mean Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) will finally meet his match this series.

Who does Sam Claflin play in the new series?

Sam Claflin has joined the cast of Peaky Blinders season five as Oswald Mosley.

Mosley was a real-life politician who rose to fame in the 1920s and ’30s as the leader of the British Union of Fascists.

However, actor Claflin teased the show’s version of the character will be a different iteration to the historical one.

The fifth series of the Birmingham-based show is set in 1929 after the financial crash and sees Tommy Shelby begin his career as a Labour MP.

WHERE IS PEAKY BLINDERS FILMED?

The official synopsis teases: “When Tommy Shelby MP is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.”

Claflin revealed in a post-screening Q&A at the British Film Institute attended by Express.co.uk what we can expect from the new season five antagonist.

He said: “Tommy is out of his comfort zone – he’s playing the big boy’s game. He’s playing chess if you will and Oswald Mosley grew up playing chess. It’s the big fish in a small pond going into the ocean all of a sudden.

“The two of them enjoy the challenge of trying to outwit one another using each other to better themselves.

“Obviously when those two characters come together, it will hopefully excite people as much as it did me.”

WILL CILLIAN MURPHY PLAY JAMES BOND?

Claflin also spoke about how he prepared to play a real historical figure in the latest series.

He added: “For me, Mosley was a fictional character – I didn’t know anything about him before stepping into his shoes.

“So I kind of was fortunate in that I was approaching it from a non-judgmental angle, I didn’t have any feelings or thoughts towards him.

“‘I do now! Wow, I do! It was very eye-opening for me.”

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN SEASON FIVE?

The BAFTA-winning show was written and created by Steven Knight who also spoke about how including the storyline of growing fascism in this series was particularly pertinent.

He told fans at the screening: “Well it’s been fortunate for us, and unfortunate for the world.

“The things that were happening – and it’s happened previously in other series as well – but the things that were happening in the time that we’re setting the series have an unbelievable resonance to what’s going on now.”

While there is no official release date for Peaky Blinders season five, anticipation is building up to a potential release in August.

Fans of the BBC show need not worry about its quality as Knight confirmed: “It gets better and better – series five is the best so far.”

Peaky Blinders season 5 will be released soon on BBC One.
