Outlander episodes for season six have officially been sent to the editing room for the show’s big return to the small screen next year. The actor who plays Young Ian, John, 23, will return to the role for the action-packed episodes and he has been posting on his Instagram page about the filming process. However, in June, the star of the Starz drama announced all scenes had been shot to make up a full season of content for fans. Filming in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic has brought challenges and it was an emotional end to shooting for the cast.

In the post, which has received over 53,000 likes on the social media platform, John is seen sitting on a horse.

Wearing his character’s clothes, the Young Ian actor poses for the camera and wrote a caption to commemorate the end of filming on season six.

The star of the small screen wrote: “Outlander wrapped. Bit late to the party, but as you are all aware now we have officially wrapped on Outlander Season 6!

“Despite all of the challenges thrown our way we have made it to the end and I couldn’t be prouder of the results.

“Masks were worn, tears were shed, and Sassenachs got sassy,” he continued, admitting it did get emotional behind the scenes and some of his co-stars did cry.

“Thank you to my amazing cast mates and our incredible crew for an unforgettable season,” John continued to write.

“To the fans, watch out! Young Ian and Rollo’s adventures are well on their way to your televisions,” he concluded.

Several of his fans replied to the post, with one sharing: “Keep up the excellent work, thank you for the entertainment.”

Another remarked: “I’ve read the books and can’t wait for more of Ian/John Bell. He’s one of my favourite characters. I just love him dearly.”

Whilst a third commented: “Does it make you sad when you wrap? Guess you know there’s another season so that makes it ok!?”

The actor also posted several other pictures and short clips from filming of the sixth season, which is set to air early next year.

It will be comprised of eight episodes, which is four or five shorter than the previous seasons due to the impact of the pandemic on filming.

A new episode of the show hasn’t aired since last May when season five came to a dramatic conclusion and fans have been waiting to see what the characters are up to now.

All scenes for the upcoming episodes were shot in Scotland and showrunner Matthew B Roberts addressed what’s to come in a statement.

“We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge,” the executive producer said.

Matthew also explained why there would be fewer episodes, adding: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges.

“Which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.

“Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normality.”

Matthew teased what’s to come for the main characters as well, explaining: “I think what’s going on in the world at the time, 1775, is really similar to what’s going on with Jamie [Sam Heughan] and Claire [Caitriona Balfe].

“There’s going to be a revolution with them as well, and I think that’s what’s going on throughout the season.

“You have a foundation and when that foundation is shaken and there is a revolution, you have to deal with it.

“That’s kind of the theme of the season,” the executive producer told Elle.com so fans have lots of exciting things to watch next year.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video UK now. Outlander season 6 will premiere on Starz in the USA next year.
