The sixth season of Outlander is due back on screens at the start of next year after another lengthy period of ‘Droughtlander’. In the meantime, fans of the popular Starz drama are wondering what’s in store for Roger Mackenzie (played by Richard Rankin) after he attempted to leave Fraser’s Ridge at the end of season five.
Richard Rankin has cast doubt over his character’s future in the sixth season of Outlander after the surprising revelations in last year’s season finale.
One of the latest outing’s most shocking moments saw Roger mistakenly hanged as a Regulator under the orders of Governor Tryon (Tim Downie).
His horrific ordeal forced the time traveller to question whether or not he belonged in the 17th Century after following Brianna (Sophie Skelton) back in time.
In a behind-the-scenes interview, Rankin explained: “Roger has come a really long way, physically, mentally.”
“He’s starting to adapt to this time and to what’s required of him, and I think he really steps up in a big way.”
Originally one of Oxford’s youngest professors, his life changes forever when Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) calls on his help for a research project concerning the Jacobite Rising.
He soon falls in love with Claire’s daughter Brianna, and follows her through the stones at Craigh Na Dun.
Roger eventually manages to adapt to his new home, but is put to the test when the American Revolution starts to encroach on his life at Fraser’s Ridge.
The star recalled: “Obviously that all goes very wrong, and he’s hung [sic].”
Thankfully, Roger was able to escape his fate once Tryon realised his mistake.
Even so, his terrifying ordeal certainly took its toll and Roger was forced to consider whether he had made the right choice.
Rankin continued: “I think that makes him question whether he should ever have been there in the first place. That really throws his future into doubt.”

“He starts to doubt himself, and if that is all he was destined to be, was the hanged man?”
Rankin’s comments fed directly into Roger’s decision to return through the stones after admitting he may not be cut out for life in the 17th Century.
However, he and Brianna were in for a shock in the season five finale as their attempt to return home led them right back to where they started.
Although the family may be content to remain in Fraser’s Ridge for now, Rankin’s thoughts hint Roger could still be having doubts over the course of the next season.
New images have already confirmed Roger will be remaining in the past for now, much as he does in Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book in the Outlander series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
Even so, Roger may no longer feel completely safe in his new home, especially now they have baby Jemmy to look after.
Outlander has already been renewed for a seventh season, so Roger may eventually find another way to return to his old life as the series progresses.
Outlander season 6 will premiere in 2022 on Starz.
