Our Yorkshire Farm star Amanda Owen has opened up about her bestselling books, raising nine children and how her rebellious side led to her being the no-nonsense farmer that she is now. While she’s certainly interested in learning and hearing from other farmers, she’s seemingly snubbed Jeremy Clarkson by avoiding his Amazon Prime series, Clarkson’s Farm.
Amanda, 47, lives on her 800-hectare (2,000-acre) hill farm, Ravenseat, and has an impressive flock of sheep, ponies, cows and dogs in Swaledale, the Yorkshire Dales, with her husband, Clive Owen.
She has several books under her belt and a hugely popular TV show, which means she is so busy that she has not had the chance to watch Clarkson’s Farm.
Opening up on how she relaxes from her busy lifestyle and if she has any guilty pleasure TV shows, viewers will be surprised to know she “doesn’t really watch TV”.
“Swimming and going on the horse. I don’t head off for a spa day. The only kind of spa I know about is a Spar shop, so there you go,” she quipped.
Discussing rival farming shows such as Clarkson’s Farm, Amanda added to The Guardian: “I haven’t seen a single one of those. Not for any reason; it’s just because I don’t watch TV.
“But it [Clarkson’s Farm] must have been alright, because farmers liked it,” she added.
Amanda has become a huge hit on her Channel 5 series, but she had to be creative about how the family could make more money and diversify.
For the Owen family, this was making cups of tea for those who passed through Ravenseat while walking the Coast to Coast.
“I can’t say that there was ever a moment I thought, ‘Right, this is how we’re going to get Ravenseat to make money,'” she explained.
“It began with making cups of tea. A simple, simple thing. What do people want who come to visit us?
“They’re coming on foot, they’re on the coast-to-coast footpath, there’s 16,000 of them walking through the farm every year.
“They want a cup of tea and a conversation. So from that conversation comes the opportunity, when one of them happens to be scouting for a TV programme. That’s where it all began.”

The show’s fifth season ended in November last year, and it left fans feeling rather emotional.
Rachel Lane tweeted at the time: “Last episode. Gutted is an understatement! The most amazing family. I’m actually gonna miss watching them!”
“Feeling emotional at #OurYorkshireFarm tonight, the show was my escapism through lockdown! Hope it’s not the last series,” avid viewer Katie Munday said.
Fans can get a small farm fix over on Amanda’s Instagram, where she often shares snaps with her 476k followers.
In a recent snowy picture shared earlier this month, Amanda impressed fans by braving the weather to perform her farmyard duties.
She captioned the windswept photo: “There’s snow & there’s snow. Todays wintery blast was horrible. Sleety wet snow coupled with wind made conditions thoroughly unpleasant.” (sic)
