OK, So Blake Lively Has Sort Of Been Trolling Us for Months—Here's Why

“What’s really great about that is she is just so inherently likable, but you can just enjoy this villainy that she does,” he continued.

“Blake is one of the most prolific marketers I’ve ever met in my life! She gets it.” Feig said, “She knows what her followers expect out of her. She knows what turns them on. She knows what turns them off. She knows what makes them bored. She knows what makes them feel manipulated.”

In short: Blake Lively knows what we’re thinking, and she’s been playing us like a true mastermind. Bow down.

Let’s look back at all the ways Emily, er, Blake sneakily made us all want to watch her new movie:

1. That one very mysterious tweet in May

It all began waaaaaaay before the movie even began its press tour. On May 1, the actress tweeted a game of Hangman—well, HangWOMAN, in this case—sans caption, only gaps you had to fill for yourself. And even if you did figure out the answer (“What happened to Emily?”), you still wouldn’t know who Emily was.

Feig said she snapped the pic while they were shooting photos for the movie’s poster. “She was taking the pictures herself with her phone and making sure you could see her shoe and making sure you could see a bit of costume.” We see you working those angles, Blake!

2. She deleted all her Instagram pics and unfollowed her husband, Ryan Reynolds.

Blake caused quite the stir when she decided to swipe her Instagram profile clean, and unfollowed everyone—including her husband. Some people panicked and thought of the worst possible scenario, aka an untimely divorce. But, this was clearly something else because Blake started to only follow people by the name Emily Nelson.

does anyone want to tell me why Blake Lively followed me and had this as a bio. Goodbye cruel world some hacker is anti-Emily, my time has come 🙂 pic.twitter.com/Yqi5MtYoBW

This, again, as we’d guessed was part of a grand promotional scheme that Blake knew would get everyone’s attention. And it succeeded. “The Instagram stunt was cooked-up by the Lionsgate digital team and marketing team, but inspired by Blake,” Feig told Cosmo. Again, she knows exactly what’ll send us all into a media frenzy.

3. That time she said she’d cheat on Ryan with Anna Kendrick

The first time Blake posted the poster for A Simple Favor, she captioned the pic with, “@annakendrick47 is the hotter, female(r) version of my husband… so, would it reaaaally count as cheating?? ?????” And, of course, as captured by Comments By Celebs, her co-star and her husband responded cheekily.

Anna replied, “So glad we’re finally taking this public. I let Ryan have Deadpool, he can give me this.” To which Ryan then said, “The most ambitious crossover event in history. I’ll miss you both. Tell my story.”

In the movie, there happens to be a steamy scene between Anna and Blake. In fact, the Pitch Perfect actress shared some details about their kiss, telling Pride Source, “We were the mintiest, freshest two people to have ever kiss in the history of America.”

4. She’s been wearing suits—and only suits—for the past couple of months.

This, by far, is the farthest any star has gone to promote their film with fashion. Blake has worn, like, her 14th suit in a row. Let’s count, shall we?

That white striped suit she was wearing when she was spotted by fans was particularly the most “Emily,” given that it’s actually seen on posters and is featured in the movie.

“We invented the look when we were putting the movie together, back in one of our first meetings with Renée Kalfus our wardrobe designer,” Feig said. “As we were finishing up, putting everything together, I had seen a couple of pictures of her in suits, then she contacted me and she said, ‘You know what, I’m just gonna keep going with the suits to help promote the movie.'”

Feig said Blake also kept sending him OOTDs. “Each one was more spectacular than the next!” This was all thanks to her amazing stylist, aka herself—no matter what the Instagram trolls say.

5. Those moving pics they’re posting on Insta—yeah, her idea.

Apparently, Blake was the one who conceptualized what Feig describes as Haunted Mansion-esque moving photos. “You start and it looks like a normal picture, but then you pull back and you realize that someone’s in a graveyard, or someone’s murdering somebody in the car, or you think she’s covered in blood but, ‘Oh, no. She’s just in the kitchen!'”

The director continued, “That’s the kind of stuff that she gets very excited about because she knows it’s going to penetrate more for the audience and cut through all the stuff that’s out there promoting every movie and TV show and piece of entertainment.”

6. Oh, and she also snuck a lil’ shoutout to Ryan in the movie

OK, so if there was one thing you absolutely needed to know, it’s that Emily loves martinis. She loves them so much, she’s mastered a technique—chilled glass, lemon rind twist, straight gin, and no ice—ever. The brand of gin Emily uses throughout the whole movie is called Aviation—which, not-so-coincidentally, is a brand owned by Ryan Reynolds.

Dear Nation, Happy Martini Day. Otherwise known as every f*#%ing day of the week to Emily. @asimplefavor @aviationgin

“At the time, I was trying to clear another gin, and Blake’s like, ‘Hey! Ryan’s got this gin that he really likes!’ She really liked the company and everybody involved,” explained Feig. “And I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t like the look of it on the screen, but I really thought the bottle looked fantastic. So I, honestly, didn’t even realize the level of involvement that [Ryan] had in it, but I think it’s great, because it’s a really good gin!”

Cheers to you, Blake! And to the rest of you, go see A Simple Favor, which opens in theaters today, because it’s funny and sharp and gorgeously shot and, well, Blake Lively really, really wants you to—and you don’t wanna know what else she might do while in-character as Emily Nelson. You’ll understand when you see it. Trust me.
