Noughts and Crosses: Why was Josh Dylan angry with BBC show? ‘It’s horrible’

BBC’s Noughts and Crosses is based on author Malorie Blackman’s novel of the same name which first came out in 2001. The book focuses on the love story between Cross Sephy (played by Masali Baduza), who is from the black ruling class and the daughter of the Home Secretary, and Nought Callum, a white member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. Their blossoming romance not only spells trouble for them but also for their loved ones as racism continues to strengthen its grip in this alternate universe.

As well as the love story of Sephy and Callum, Noughts and Crosses also pays attention to Callum’s brother Jude McGregor (Josh Dylan).

Struggling to cope with the unfairness of being part of the underclass, Jude regularly takes his anger out on the police enforcing the laws and those who look down on him.

But his anger soon grows after friend Danny (Charlie Chambers) is brutally attacked by an officer during a night out with his friends.

Danny ends up in hospital with life-threatening injuries and Jude can only sit by and hope that he pulls through.

With a lack of opportunities, no work and his friend in hospital, Jude’s resentment towards the Crosses gets more serious.

He isn’t the only one either who is determined for things to change as groups of Noughts start to meet to discuss their current situation.

While his brother Callum is trying to get into a military academy which is predominantly attended by Crosses, Jude is more eager than ever to change the unjust system he has grown up in.

Fans will just have to wait to find out where this will lead him and what he will think about Callum’s new romance.

What angered actor Josh Dylan while filming Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses?

Following the screening of the first episode of Noughts and Crosses, actor Dylan admitted he didn’t enjoy filming parts of the series.

He said: “Going through the process of trying to bring this character to life, it’s really horrible, it’s really difficult and it’s really disturbing.

“And I really, you know, I didn’t enjoy it.

“I’m going to be honest, like it was unpleasant.

“Especially with the opening scene and the kind of the police brutality.

“That’s something you know, as a young white man in London, isn’t in my day to day. And it made me really angry.”

Besides from Noughts and Crosses, Dylan is reasonably new to the industry with just a few credits to his name.

However, fans might remember him from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again where he played young Bill.

He was also Todd in Netflix and Channel 4’s The End of the F***ing World who ended up marrying Alyssa (Jessica Barden) in the second series.

Noughts and Crosses is the first series where he has played one of the major central characters.
