Nick Knowles upsets I'm A Celebrity fans with 'sexist' remark after saying the female campmates will be 'jumpier' on their period

The DIY SOS host was quick to bring up the girls' menstrual cycle after things got heated in camp.

He told John Barrowman: "Remember the girls are going to be a bit jumpier because of what time of the month they told us it is.

"We’re going to have that for a couple of days with the girls."

John nodded and later said in the Bush Telegraph: “Tensions are a little high today that’s why I am just doing this” and acted out zipping his mouth.

It came after Rita Simons voiced that there was not enough rice being cooked for lunch, after admitting it was her time of the month.

Nick's comment left some I'm A Celebrity fans furious, with one saying: "Men: When a woman speaks out about something she is unhappy about, do NOT brush it off or dismiss it as ‘time of the month’ – having a period does not invalidate our argument or feelings. Nick Knowles take heed. #imaceleb."

Another added: "#imaceleb hmm not sure how to feel about that period blaming nick."

Someone else said: "@imacelebrity Yes Nick Knowles…. It's not that they're tired and hungry like you men, the ladies must be "tetchy" because they are having periods?! #pinitontheperiod #imaceleb."

Another said: "Oh Nick!! I loved you but blaming a woman speaking out because she’s on her period isn’t it Chief #ImACeleb."

Things got tense in camp tonight when John started cooking lunch for camp.

Rita heard he had put on just four portions of rice and said in the Bush Telegraph: “That’s not enough for 11 of us. Everyone’s too scared to speak up about it so I do in a jokey passive aggressive way."

Back in camp she asked the other camp mates: “Hands up who wants more rice because I do, put your hands up if you want more, it’s too much to squirrel away, and it’s ridiculous.”

Taken aback, John, 51, said in the Bush Telegraph: “That came out of nowhere, all of a sudden people wanted more rice which is fine but it was the way it was approached like it was the blame of the cooks who were doing it.”

Sair Khan asked how many portions John was now going to cook and he replied: “I’m just going to do all of them, everyone wants all the rice so I’m going to do it all.”

He also ruffled feathers during a conversation about handling women's knickers.

He asked John: “I don’t feel comfortable handling women’s knickers but they are wet and need drying so would you hang them on the line?”

John replied: “Why do you feel uncomfortable, it’s just an item of clothing, it’s not inappropriate. It’s fine to hang a pair of women’s knickers on the washing line."

Emily said she appreciated Nick’s old fashioned chivalry, saying: “I understand how a man would feel awkward picking up a young woman’s knickers he hasn’t known for very long.”

But annoyed by the comment, John asked: “Then why is it ok for me a gay man to pick it up but it’s not ok for a straight man? It’s just a piece of clothing!”

“Touching a pair of knickers doesn’t mean you want to have sex with them, there are no sexual connotations at all, she might have a problem with me picking up her knickers but I don’t have a problem with it, I do laundry, it’s no big deal!"

Some fans of the show were on Nick's side after he was attacked online for his "sexist" remark.

One said: "The girl said they’d be tetchy because they are on their periods, which let’s be honest, girls are. I think Nick was just trying to be nice but of course people have to take offence #imaceleb."

Another added: "Surprise surprise that the "I'm offended" crew are up in arms about Nick mentioning periods. Leave the guy alone! #ImACeleb."

Someone else said: "All the women having a go at Nick n John over the period comment, Rita and Fluer both said at the start if the episode they were gonna be in bad form cos of their periods!! #ImACeleb."
