Netflix and Amazon to double their original content, according to new study

A new study has found that streaming services Netflix and Amazon are set to double their original content in an effort to stave off competitors.

The study, by TV analyst firm Ampere Analysis, found that Netflix has more than 250 new commissions planned.

Netflix currently has 229 originals, meaning the number will more than double with the new additions.

As for Amazon, it currently has 105 originals on file and a “similar number of new commissions” for its Amazon Prime Video service.

The amping up of original content comes as both Netflix and Amazon face increasing competition from Facebook, YouTube and Apple.

There’s also DC Universe and Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which will not only compete with Netflix but will also take content away from it.

Richard Cooper, an analyst at Ampere, told The Hollywood Reporter: “All the major players have been expanding the number of original commissions in the face of an increasingly competitive market.

“What’s interesting is the different audience profile that each of the [services] appear to be targeting with their originals content, suggesting they’re aiming at different niches within the SVOD market.”

According to Ampere’s research, Netflix has been “maintaining its focus on the youth-skewing genres of comedy and sci-fi, which have a track record of success for the company”.

Cooper added that YouTube Premium is focusing largely on youth-oriented comedy and cutting back on reality series, while Facebook is increasing its numbers of scripted drama and comedy commissions.
